Frequently asked questions.
Understanding Chiropractic Care:
-
Chiropractic is a registered healthcare profession in Australia focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of musculoskeletal conditions, particularly those affecting the spine and nervous system. As registered chiropractors, we use a range of hands-on techniques, most commonly spinal adjustments or manipulations, to improve joint function, reduce pain, and promote overall well-being. Our approach is holistic, considering the bigger picture of your body's structure and function. We adhere to the national standards set by the Chiropractic Board of Australia.
-
While often associated with back pain and neck pain, chiropractic care can assist with various musculoskeletal issues relevant to our active Inner West community. This includes, but not limited to, headaches (such as tension headaches and those originating from the neck), sciatica, sports injuries (common from local clubs and activities), shoulder and hip pain, and postural problems often stemming from work or lifestyle. We aim to address the root cause of your discomfort.
-
Chiropractic care is widely recognised as a safe treatment option in Australia when delivered by a registered chiropractor. Like all healthcare interventions, some minor and temporary side effects are possible, such as mild soreness or stiffness after an adjustment, similar to post-exercise discomfort. Serious complications are rare. We conduct thorough assessments to understand your individual health history and any potential risk factors to ensure the safest and most effective care.
-
Your initial visit to The Chiro Room will involve a detailed discussion about your health history, current symptoms, and health goals. We'll perform a comprehensive physical examination, including orthopaedic, neurological, and postural assessments. We may also discuss the need for X-rays if clinically indicated. Following the examination, we'll explain our findings and discuss a proposed treatment plan tailored to your needs. Treatment will commence during this first visit in most cases.
-
A chiropractic adjustment is a specific, controlled movement applied to a joint that is restricted or not moving properly. While you might feel brief pressure during the adjustment, most patients don't experience pain and often report feeling relief afterwards. The "popping" or "clicking" sound, often called joint cavitation, is simply the release of gases naturally present in the joint fluid, similar to opening a soft drink. It's not bones cracking.
-
Absolutely! We understand that not everyone is comfortable with the audible aspect of some adjustments. At The Chiro Room, we are skilled in a variety of gentle and effective techniques that can restore joint mobility without the noticeable "crack" or "pop." We utilise several advanced tools and techniques that can achieve similar results without the audible joint cavitation, including:
The Activator Method: This is a gentle, low-force technique that uses a small, handheld instrument called an Activator adjusting instrument. The Activator delivers a precise, controlled impulse to the joint without the forceful movements that often produce a sound. Many patients find this method very comfortable.
Drop Piece Tables: Our treatment tables may incorporate "drop pieces." These are cushioned sections of the table that can be gently moved during an adjustment. The controlled drop allows gravity to assist in the mobilization of the joint, often without the need for a high-velocity thrust that creates a sound.
Low-Force Mobilisation Techniques: We are also trained in various manual mobilisation techniques that involve gentle, sustained pressure or slow movements to restore joint motion. These techniques focus on stretching and articulating the joints within their comfortable range of motion, often without any audible release.
Muscle Release Techniques: Sometimes, restricted joint movement is due to tight muscles surrounding the joint. We may use techniques like soft tissue massage, trigger point therapy, or instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) to release muscle tension, which can indirectly improve joint mobility without a direct adjustment involving a sound.
The best approach depends on your individual condition, preferences, and comfort levels. We will conduct a thorough assessment to determine the most appropriate and effective techniques for you. Please don't hesitate to voice your preference for techniques that don't involve the "cracking" sound.
-
The number of treatments varies depending on your specific condition, how long it has been present, its severity, and how your body responds to care. Together, we’ll curate a personalised treatment plan and regularly review your progress. Some individuals may experience relief relatively quickly within a few sessions, while more chronic or complex issues may require a longer course of care. We believe in transparent communication about your treatment journey.
-
Absolutely. The shift to more home-based work has led to increased postural strain for many. We can assess your workstation setup, provide guidance on ergonomic practices, and use chiropractic adjustments and other therapies to address neck pain, back pain, and headaches related to poor posture.
-
Paediatric chiropractic care focuses on the unique needs of a child's developing spine and nervous system. Chiropractors to use gentle techniques, different from adult adjustments, to address any developmental milestone concerns, tongue and lip ties, and to support overall well-being in infants, toddlers, and older children.
-
Yes, when performed by a trained and experienced chiropractor, chiropractic care is considered safe for children. Adjustments are modified to suit a child's age, size, and the specific issue being addressed, often using very light pressure.
-
Chiropractors use very gentle techniques for children. For infants, adjustments might involve fingertip pressure. Older children may receive light pressure or specialised instruments such as the Activator. Force is always adapted to the child's size and the maturity of their spine. There is often no "cracking" or "popping" sound.
Practical Information for the Inner West Community:
-
No, in Australia, you can directly access chiropractic care without a referral from your General Practitioner (GP). Chiropractors are primary healthcare practitioners. However, if your GP has referred you under a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan (formerly known as an EPC plan), part of your consultation fees may be covered by Medicare. Please discuss this with your GP.
-
The majority of private health insurance policies in Australia offer coverage for chiropractic care under their "extras" or "allied health" benefits which can be used in our clinic with HICAPS for on-the-spot claiming. The level of coverage varies depending on your specific fund and policy. We recommend contacting your health fund directly to understand your entitlements.
